Sebring Sun Debut winner for Newnham

Tara Madgwick - Monday January 5

Former Randwick trainer Mark Newnham extended his lead at the top of the Hong Kong trainers’ championship at sha tin on Sunday when Supreme Sea made a winning debut over 1200m.

A three year-old gelding that won a trial in Australia at Newcastle in June last year, he kicked off with an easy two length win with Lyle Hewitson in the saddle.

A three-year-old by Glenthorne Park Thoroughbreds bargain sire Sebring Sun, Supreme Sea was trained in Australia by Steve Hodge, who also prepared Newnham’s stable star My Wish before the subsequent winner of last season’s Hong Kong Classic Mile was exported to Hong Kong.

Supreme Sea is the third winner from three to race, all of them by Sebring Sun, from Helmet mare Tough Baby, a grand-daughter of stakes-winner Super Snooper.

Sebring Sun has now had two winners in Hong Kong from just three starters.

His overall winner to runner strike rate is 68% and at a fee of $6,600, he’s a great choice for breed to race owners.
