Widden Sell First Million Dollar Yearling for Anamoe

Tara Madgwick - Friday January 16

Australian Horse of the Year Anamoe is leading the first season sire averages at Magic Millions and put the issue well beyond doubt when he produced his first seven figure yearling on Friday with Widden Stud’s colt from Secret Trail fetching $1.1million.

The fifth foal of stakes-winning Denman mare Secret Trail from the family of Group I winning sprinter Gold Trail, the colt was bred by Widden in partnership with long time client Robert Anderson. He is a half-brother to stakes-placed Spywire, who was third in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic to Storm Boy and won the $1million Magic Millions The Syndicate last Saturday.

$1.1million Anamoe colt from Secret Trail.

Spywire’s trainer Ciaron Maher was also the purchaser of this colt with his Bloodstock Manager Will Bourne .

“When Ciaron and I first saw him at the farm at yearling inspections at Widden, he was the last one brought out and they usually leave their best for last and he was their prized icon,” said Bourne.

“On paper it was obvious, but just on face value, it was the horse in front of you that really took Ciaron’s eye and made him want to buy the colt.

“Obviously that Spywire factor is there, but he was just a big, imposing, strong colt in front of you and that was the main reason.”

Ciaron Maher and partners have now purchased three so far from this sale by Anamoe.

“We’ve seen a lot of Anamoes that we liked and there were a few traits that Ciaron was querying,” Bourne said.

“Myself, Ciaron and Andy Makiv went and checked out Anamoe when we were looking at all the yearlings in between parades in the Hunter Valley and it was the first time we’d seen him in a while and, I tell you what, there are a lot of similarities.”

Secret Trail slipped last year so had no foal, but was then covered by Widden Stud’s champion sire Zoustar.
