Tassort Filly Wins Listed Lonhro Plate on Debut

Tara Madgwick - Saturday February 7

Tassort filly Agrarian Girl has shown plenty of potential in two recent trial wins and she took it through to race day to post a debut win in the Listed ATC Lonhro Plate (1000m) at Randwick on Saturday.

Easy in the market, the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained filly was given a great ride by Winona Costin. She worked forward from the gates to lead on the fence and then when challenged after turning for home showed some real tenacity.

With Costin urging her all the way, Agrarian Girl kept finding and scored by half a length over the race favourite Spicy Miss (Trapeze Artist) with Wild Ruler gelding Savage Look in third place.

They clocked a brisk 57.17 seconds for the 1000m.

Adrian Bott was not surprised by the first up victory for Agrarian Girl.

“She has been a very talented filly all the way through. We did feel we were throwing her a little bit in the deep end and we did have her nominated for Canberra yesterday as well,” Bott revealed.

"In fairness, off her trials and the way she looked, she just looked too magnificent to pass up racing here for a bit of black type on her home track.

"She has just thrived. She has done nothing wrong in her trials and she has been very well educated all the way through.

"Maybe she has looked a little bit under pressure in her trials, but she has still been learning and developing and she responded in those and that's exactly what she did today.

"She looked in a bit of trouble at the furlong, but she really lifted and won quite easily on the line in the end."

The Golden Slipper is on the radar for Agrarian Girl with her path forward to be decided, but for now she can go home tonight a stakes-winner and Winona Costin was thrilled to be a part of her success.

"You are always confident when you go out on a Gai and Adrian two-year-old. It's even better when you can get out in front,” said Costin.

"She is very professional, she goes about her business and does everything the right way. She's tough and pinned her ears back when she saw another one, she is very game."

Agrarian Girl was a $280,000 Inglis Premier purchase.

A $280,000 Inglis Premier purchase from Emirates Park for Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott / Kestrel Thoroughbreds, Agrarian Girl picked up $132,000 for her debut win and some valuable Black Type.

Bred by Emirates Park, she is the first foal of stakes-winner Liwa, a half-sister by Mulaazem to Group III winner Coleman, who was second in a Golden Slipper. It’s a terrific family with fourth dam being multiple Group I winner Canny Lass, the full sister to Golden Slipper winning sire Canny Lad.

Liwa had a filly by Harry Angel (IRE) last year.

Agrarian Girl is the third stakes-winner for Newgate Farm’s Tassort joining Manaal and Ameena, with all of them bred by Emirates Park. Tassort has nine entries for Inglis Classic.
