One to Watch – Newcastle

Tara Madgwick - Monday February 16

A $600,000 Proisir filly that is a half-sister to a Group I winner opened her account at Newcastle on Monday.

Trained by Michael Freedman, Vidia was first up from a spell following two modest efforts last year in July and August when sixth and fourth in provincial maidens.

Vidia has returned a stronger filly this time in and showed that under a positive ride from Andrew Adkins. She was sent forward from the gates to hold the rail and shared the lead until she kicked clear in the straight to win the 1150m maiden by a length.

Vidia was a $600,000 Karaka Book 1 purchase.

Vidia was a $600,000 Karaka Book 1 purchase from Kilgravin Lodge for Gandharvi, but runs for a syndicate headed by Yarraman Park.

She is a half-sister to Group I winner Ulanova, stakes-winner Steal My Kisses and stakes-placed Butter Blonde and Butch Cassidy being the eighth winner from eight foals to race from Group III placed Elusive Quality (USA) mare The Fairy’s Kiss.

It’s a family with the potential for upside as both Ulanova and Steal My Kisses produced fillies by Zoustar last spring, although for Ulanova that filly is her first and only foal as she died after having her.
