Brazen Beau Stakes Double As Cinsault Wins G2 Millie Fox Stakes

Dane Squance - Saturday February 21

Minutes after 60/1 shot Power Beau won the Listed SAJC City Of Marion Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville to become the 28th stakes winner for Darley’s Brazen Beau, the Michael Freedman trained Cinsault won the G2 ATC Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill to become the 29th stakes winner for her sire.

Winning the race prior, the G2 Hobartville Stakes with Farnan gelding Ninja, trainer Maichel Freedman made it a stakes double when Cinsault held off the race favourite to score a narrow victory.

Jumping away well from the gates and settling in second position behind the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained Heat Missile, with the Chris Waller trained race favourite Lazzura tracking along in third, jockey Chad Schofield ensured the leader didn’t get too much of a start.

As they turned into he home straight, Heat Missile still had the lead, but Cinsault and Lazzura commenced their runs, chasing down the leader before pulling away for their own battle.

While it looked like the James McDonald ridden Lazzura got her head in front at one stage, her condition appeared to give out first up as the race fit Cinsault, coming off the back of two prior wins, stuck her head out when it mattered, recording her first black type victory.

“It just goes to show what can happen when you have a mare in form like she is at the moment,” Freedman said.

“On facts and figures, I didn't think she could beat Lazzura but she is in such a purple patch of form.

“This is a massive jump from a benchmark 78 race to a Group 2 but with a mare going as well as her, sometimes you just have to roll with it.

“I had a good chat with the Godolphin team early in the week and I told them I know this is a bit of a 'Hail Mary' but I thought it was worth having a go at some black type with Cinsault.

“Godolphin are very easy to train for and they said we will go with what you think.”

Chad Schofield was suitably impressed by the win of the mare.

“She (Cinsault) actually beat me in a ding-dong finish last start and I can see why, she's very gutsy, she just wants to give you everything she has,” Schofield said.

“There was probably a bit more pressure early in the race than I would've liked, but we were up there travelling well.

“I waited until we straightened to come off the leader's back and when Lazzura didn't put me away early I thought ‘right, we're the fit horse, we'll get you later’. She was the stronger of the two late.”

With five wins and eight places from 14 starts, with earnings of $460,700, the consistent Godolphin bred mare is one of three winners from four to the races out of the Listed winning Street Cry mare Fitou.

From the extended family of G1 winners Triscay, La Baraka, Alizee, Astern and Demerger, Fitou has an unraced 2yo Exceed And Ecxel colt named Tannin also in the Freedman stable while the mare unfortunately slipped followed by missing to Bivouac before being covered by the same G1-winning stallion in the Spring.

Darley's Brazen Beau Recorded A Stakes Double On Saturday With Power Beau And Cinsault

Earlier in the day, 5yo Brazen Beau gelding Power Beau contested his first stakes race, and after sitting in second position behind Mudgee visitor Compelling Truth, proved too hard to be run down in the straight, winning the Listed City Of Marion Stakes (1200m) by more than a length and a quarter.

With 45 stakes performers to his record led by G1 winners Zapateo, Another Prophet and On The Bubbles, Brazen Beau will be represented by nine lots at the upcoming Inglis Premier yearling sale including the Twin Hills consigned half-sister to the G2-winning, G1 placed Alsephina (Lot 8).
