Long Shot Wins G3 Launceston Cup – New SW for Capitalist

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday February 25

Capitalist is well proven as a source of fast and precocious winners, but it was six year-old Kiwi bred gelding Asva that became his latest stakes-winner when scoring a surprise win in the $250,000 Launceston Cup (2400m) on Wednesday.

A $100,000 Karaka Book 1 purchase from Mapperley Stud for Snowden Racing, Asva started his racing career in Sydney with the Snowden stable and had 13 starts for one win before being offered through Inglis Digital in January of 2024 where he was bought by Mr E Sakareassen for $50,000.

Asva was originally a Karaka Book 1 purchase for $100,000 ad was then sold as a tried horse through Inglis Digital for $50,000.

Sent to Tasmania where he joined the stable of Glenn Stevenson, Asva has found his mojo as a stayer.

Seventh in the Group III Launceston Cup last year, he returned this year with Jett Stanley in the saddle and scored a bold length victory at 25-1 taking his overall record to eight wins and 19 placings from 39 starts with prizemoney in excess of $500,000.

Asva was bred by Rosemont Stud and is a half-brother to Group III winner Exoboom and stakes-winner Fierce Flight being the third stakes-winner from five foasl to race from stakes-placed Dylan Thomas (IRE) mare First Bloom, who was second in a Listed Tasmanian Oaks.

Asva is the 29th stakes-winner for Capitalist and is his first at a distance longer than a mile.
