This Lonhro Colt Looks a Bit Special

Mark Smith - Sunday November 4

The champion Lonhro kick-started the Flemington Carnival on Saturday with two stakes-winners, Ranier and Aristia, however, at Rosehill all the talk was about Lonhro's unbeaten son Roheryn.

The James Cummings-trained 3yo colt powered over the top of the talented performers Ronstar and Brazilica by upwards of four lengths in the 1200 metre handicap to make it two from two.

The strapping colt has a big future according to Godolphin's representative Darren Beadman.

"We've always liked him but it's one thing to run on a heavy 10 midweek then come to a Saturday race where horses are a bit more race savvy than him. The small field suited him but wow that was impressive.

"James (Cummings) said to pass on the message to Josh (Parr) to ride him confidently, get him into a nice rhythm and make it positive so he finishes it off strongly. He seems to have a bit of quality about him."

Even more exciting is that Roheryn is the final foal of Mannington who Darley purchased for $2,050,000 at the 2005 Inglis Easter Broodmare Sale. She is the dam of Group 1 Victoria Derby winner Benicio and Group II MVRC Sportingbet Classic winner Romneya.

A Group III winning half-sister to Coolmore Classic heroine Bollinger, Mannington is the product of multiple champion stallion Danehill and the Golden Slipper winner Bint Marscay.

Mannington spent a good deal of her broodmare career overseas, leaving our shores in 2005 before being repatriated in 2013.

In America, she left the unraced Kingmambo filly Rose Trail who is the dam of the French Group III winner Rose Imperial (Pivotal) and the dual Listed winner Rosental (Pivotal).

Romneya is the dam of the multiple Group-placed Matilija (Medaglia d'Oro) who has a yearling colt by Exceed and Excel while Romneya recently foaled a Teofilo (IRE) filly.

Mannington died in May last year, while her 28yo dam Bint Marscay is living out her life in contented retirement at Old Friends Farm in Kentucky.
