Statue Of Liberty Colt Shows Them a Clean Pair of Heels on Debut

Mark Smith - Friday November 29

Despite being pensioned at Sun Stud earlier this year, the final chapter on the career of Statue Of Liberty (USA) is still to be written.

Last week Craig Newitt guided the 2yo gelding Le Cadeau to victory at his debut at Launceston to credit the royally-bred son of Storm Cat with his first winner from his penultimate full crop and at Canberra on Friday it was the turn of the John Sargent-trained Brash Sammy to make a winning career debut.

Sent off a short-priced favourite on the strength of an impressive win in a barrier trial at Randwick just three days ago, Brash Sammy tracked the early speed before being given full rein by Lee Magorrian to win by two and a half lengths from the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Sole Heir, an Exceed And Excel half brother to Smart Missile, with Peter and Paul Snowden’s $230,000 Brazen Beau colt Endorse a further three and a half lengths back in third.

A homebred, Brash Sammy is the second foal and second winner out of the Reset mare Repour who failed to hit the board in five starts and comes from the family of the Group II QTC Qantas Cup winner Overpitch (Lunchtime).
