Which Vendor?

Tara Madgwick - Monday December 23

Which vendor has sold three of the past eight Magic Millions 2YO Classic winners?

Sunlight is one of three Magic Millions 2YO Classic winners sold by Widden Stud in the past eight yearsThe annual Magic Millions Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast has produced countless champions in its proud history and Widden Stud can lay claim to having sold three of the last eight Magic Millions 2YO Classic winners.

The Gai Waterhouse trained Fastnet Rock filly Driefontein started the winning run in 2012 when she scored a memorable victory on protest for a big team of owners put together by Denise Martin’s Star Thoroughbreds.

Driefontein was bought for $75,000 and retired with earnings of $2.3million before being sold to Japan to embark on her breeding career, providing a fairytale result for her owners.

Driefontein was the equal cheapest filly by her champion sire sold that year proving you do not have to spend a fortune to make a fortune!

A $120,000 purchase from the 2014 sale, Exceed and Excel colt Le Chef scored his career defining win in the $2million race in 2015 for trainer Darryl Hansen and Mt Is based owner Lenore Saunders.

Le Chef was a stunning yearling that sold considerably short of his worth due to a minor x-ray issue which ruled out many of the Hong Kong buyers and bigger syndicators, proving almost perfect is often better than perfect.

For the record, Le Chef has still been competing successfully in 2019 as a seven year-old…. now that’s a sound horse!

The third Widden Stud sold Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner is champion filly Sunlight, who was bought in 2017 for $300,000 by Aquis Farm/McEvoy Mitchell Racing/Blue Sky Bloodstock.

The champion daughter of Zoustar is trained by Tony and Calvin McEvoy and has won 11 of 21 starts earning over $6.5 million. She may well be the finest filly ever bred by Widden Stud, whose Katie Thompson has a share in her ownership.

Widden Stud will present a draft of 42 yearlings at the Gold Coast in 2020 including 25 sired by our own stallions Zoustar, Sebring, Star Witness, Nicconi, Your Song and Stratum Star. See all the Widden lots here.
