$725,000 Astern Colt

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday January 8

Darley’s Golden Rose winner Astern was the first of the newcomer sires to smash one out of the park at Magic Millions on Wednesday with his powerhouse colt from Zimaretto making $725,000 to the bid of Asian Bloodstock Services.

$725,000 Astern colt from ZimarettoConsigned by Yarraman Park, the stunning bay is a half-brother to three stakes-winners in California Zimbol, From Within and Cruden Bay being from terrific producer Zimaretto, who has had five foals to race and all are winners.

Astern covered many lovely mares in his first season at stud, but few would be better placed to deliver him early success than Zimaretto.

Asian Bloodstock Services purchased California Zimbol from the Yarraman draft at this sale in 2018 for $450,000 and will be hoping for similar success with this colt.

“It’s a bit higher than we wanted to pay, but we really wanted this colt,” said Marie Yoshida of Asian Bloodstock Services in her post sale comments.

“We’ve been lucky before purchasing from Yarraman with California Zimbol and we like the Medaglia D’Oro sire line.”

Astern stood last season at a fee of $33,000 and his first crop including this colt were conceived at a fee of $38,500, so this sale represents a stunning sale ring success for this young Darley sire.
