A colt by Capitalist was the star on Day Two as the 2021 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale was declared a runaway success.
Offered by Cornerstone Stud, the day's top seller became the fourth lot to pass the previous record price when he sold for $425,000.
Bidding online from his Singapore base, Mr Chua Song Ru of Aramco Racing was the successful buyer of the Capitalist colt, who is the eighth foal of the group performed Flying Spur mare Okaylah. Spendthrift Farm was underbidder.
A Melbourne winning half sister to Kick 'n' Chase, Okaylah earned black as a two and three-year-old before retiring to stud where she has already produced five winners.
Sam Hayes of Cornerstone Stud was delighted with the final price of the handsome chestnut colt.
"I am a bit overwhelmed actually," a delighted Hayes said. "There was quite a big build-up. I was a bit nervous, so it was great that he sold like that."
"That probably exceeded our expectations but the market is strong. It has been a great year for horse racing, the past twelve months, and we are just happy to be part of it."
"I think that’s the best thing about it is, it gets you thinking about what you can bring back next year when they make that sort of money," Hayes added.
Earlier in the day the Impending-Kandy Korn filly offered by Armidale Stud was sold for $250,000 to Victorian based buyer Anthony Ottobre.
The filly, who is a half sister to recent Hobart Cup winner Double You Tee and group performer Lunakorn, looks set for a future of racing in Melbourne.
The result helped elevate Armidale Stud to third place on the leading vendor list (by average - 2 or more sold) and follows on from their sale topping result at the recent Tasmanian Yearling Sale.
Goldin Farm, who provided the two top sellers yesterday, rounded out as leading vendor by average with their seven sellers averaging $171,286. Emirates Park ($140,000 for 2 sold), Edinburgh Park ($96,667 for 3 sold) and Grenville Stud ($92,000 for 5 sold) also provided great highlights.
Cornerstone Stud was the leading vendor by gross with almost $1.4 million grossed on their 20 yearlings sold. Baramul Stud were close behind on $1.281 million for 20 sellers and Goldin Farms grossed almost $1.2 million for seven lots sold.
The partnership of Will Clarken, Suman Hedge Bloodstock and David Jolly rounded out the sale as leading buyer on gross with their eight purchases costing $751,000. Mark Kavanagh snapped up 11 lots across both days.
Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said he was delighted with the figures returned over the past two days in Adelaide.
"They (Cornerstone) are one of the figurehead breeders in the state, one of the stallion stations here in the state and they have kept an outstanding colt back here for the sale and they have been rewarded," Bowditch said.
"I think, again, it will give Sam confidence that he can bring that sort of horse to the sale and get a great result which is what we have been trying to get to for years and I am pleased that we've been able to achieve that in this market.
"In my time, it is far and above anything we've achieved here. To average well into the $50,000s, to clear 86 per cent of the Book One horses, the sale has grossed almost $15 million, it is a fantastic result for the state."
