Best On Breeding

Mark Smith - Thursday April 29

With an entry for the National Broodmare Sale at the Gold Coast next month, it would be a perfect time for the Anthony Cummings-trained Mizzy to break through for a well-deserved Group 1 win.

When the daughter of Zoustar lines up for Saturday’s $500,000 TAB Classic (Robert Sangster Stakes) (1200m), it will be her eighth attempt at the elite level and fifth in succession.

Before disappointing at her most recent start in the George Ryder Stakes, Mizzy finished second behind Krone in the Coolomore Classic. Previous to that she had split Savatiano and Masked Crusader in a desperately close finish in the Canterbury Stakes at Randwick.

A five-week freshen-up should have Mizzy cherry ripe for the drop back in distance.

Back in the spring of 2019, Mizzy reeled off consecutive wins in the Group III Toy Show Quality at Randwick, Group II Sheraco Stakes at Rosehill, and Group II Golden Pendant at Rosehill. She then placed third in both the $500,000 Silver Eagle and the $7.5million Golden Eagle behind Kolding and Sunlight.

Connections entered 2020 full of confidence, but Mizzy numbered just one start that year, a failure when trying to defend her title in the Sheraco Stakes.

She refused to stretch out due to a muscle strain, and when Mizzy lined up for the Group II Expressway Stakes at Rosehill on January 30, she had started just once in sixty-five weeks.

Despite weakening out to finish last in the Expressway, connections were encouraged to send the 5yo daughter of Zoustar south for the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield. She finished unplaced after a torrid run but was far from disgraced, beaten just over three lengths.

A $200,000 purchase for her trainer from the Segenhoe Stud draft at the 2017 Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Mizzy has a record of four wins, six seconds and three thirds from 24 starts with earnings of  $1,690,030.

Bred by Robert Crabtree, Mizzy is the first foal of the Magnus mare Missy Cummings.

Also bred by Robert Crabtree’s Dorrington Farm, Missy Cummings was purchased by Anthony Cummings for $80,000 at the 2011 Inglis Premier Yearling sale.

She won her first three starts culminating with a defeat of the top-class Catkins in the Listed James Carr Stakes at Randwick, after which Crabtree repurchased the filly. Unfortunately, Missy Cummings was to have just one more start, a failure in the $500,000 Inglis Guineas at Scone.

Mizzy a $200,000 Easter Yearling

The line of stakes-winning dams goes back a further two generations. Missy Cummings is a daughter of the 3-time Listed winner Lady Knockout (Serheed), a daughter of the Group II WATC Champion Fillies Stakes-winner and Group 1 South Australian Oaks runner-up Prime Again (Marooned).

This is a family championed by the late John Roberts, a one-time big player in the yearling market purchasing in the name of the global conglomerate he founded, Multiplex Constructions.

Missy Cummings has a 2yo coly by Capitalist named Systemic and a yearling filly by Written Tycoon, which Mick Price purchased for $600,000 at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

After slipping in 2019, Missy Cummings was covered by Zoustar again last spring.

An imposing physical, Mizzy has something in common with Bonecrusher, Beauty Generation Dundeel, Starspangledbanner, Elvstroem, Showgate, Private Steer, Highland Reel (IRE), II Tempo, Fury's Order, Zephyr Bay, Kingdom Bay, Sacred Kingdom, Ambitious Dragon, Princess Talaria, Red Handed, Shantung, Ritmar and Taipan.

They are all part of the rich legacy left by the New Zealand Hall Of Famer, Eulogy (GB).
