One To Watch - Kilmore

Mark Smith - Tuesday September 28

Fleet-footed Astern filly Sharwin led at every call to make the best possible start to her career in a three-year-old maiden over 1100m at Kilmore on Tuesday.

Ridden by Daniel Moor for Anthony and Sam Freedman, Sharwin dropped the trailing pack turning for home. She needed little more than a couple of backhanders to defeat the Fighting Sun filly Rioyuki by two and a quarter lengths with the Frosted (USA) filly Frost Yourself a half-length back in third.

Moor said there are better things in store for the grey daughter of Astern.

“Typically Freedman prepared, she’s very professional,” Moor said.

“She had a little hiccup the other day at Ballarat where she was scratched. She handled herself well today, she bounced and controlled.

uo;I thought she was going to be a little aggressive early, but she came back underneath me, got into a really good rhythm and sustained the run to the post.

“She’s fast and raw at the moment. She probably has to add a string to her bow – she may have to switch off a fraction, which she may do with experience.”

A $62,500 purchased by Baystone Farm from the Newgate Farm draft at the National Weanling Sale, Sharwin made $110,000 to the bid of  Group 1 Bloodstock (FBAA) when offered by Sledmere Stud at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Bred by Love Racing, Sharwin is the third winner from as many to race out of the talented filly Greytfilly (Ferocity) who placed behind Romantic Moon and Thump in the Group III ATC Sweet Embrace Stakes.

Sun Kisses’ stakes-placed half-sister Face of the Earth (Strategic) is the dam of Group III ATC Nivison Stakes winner Diamond Earth (Choisir) and stakes-placed Halle Rocks (Fastnet Rock).

Ciaron Maher Racing bought a Pariah colt out of Greytfilly for $40,000 from the Newhaven Park draft at the 2021 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

The sire of last Saturday’s Group III Scarborough Stakes winner Seradess, Astern is standing the current season at Darley NSW for a fee of $16,500.
