Sebring's Bring The Ransom Shocks in Dark Jewel

A rail-hugging ride by Tyler Schiller paved the way for the 5yo Sebring mare Bring The Ransom to open her stakes account in Saturday’s Group III Arrowfield Dark Jewel Classic (1400m) at Scone.

The Bjorn Baker-trained mare defied her 50/1 odds by defeating the Kris Lees-trained pair Wandabaa (Wandjina) and Never Talk (No Nay Never).

It was the sixth black-type attempt for Bring The Ransom, who previously came closest when second to More Prophets in the  Listed Mona Lisa Stakes at Wyong last September.

The homebred advances her record to eight wins, two seconds, and two thirds from 29 starts, with earnings of $516,050.

The daughter of Sebring is the lone winner from two to race from the stakes-placed Stratum mare Gold Epona, a granddaughter of the Group 1 VATC One Thousand Guineas winner Shizu.

Gold Epona has an unraced 2yo Star Witness gelding named Gold Witness, who was a $160,000 purchase by Tricolours / Gai Waterhouse / Adrian Bott from the Vinery Stud draft at the 2021 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

Gold Epona was covered by Star Turn last spring.

Bring The Ranson is the 76th stakes-winner for the former Widden Stud resident Sebring.
