Entries for the Inglis Ready2Race Sale – which last year resulted in a record gross, average and median – are now open.
The Inglis Ready2Race Sale has in recent years asserted itself as clearly the most progressive 2YO auction in Australasia for both vendors and buyers.
Not only did the 2021 renewal result in a record gross ($12,016,500), average ($109,241) and median ($80,000), but 46 lots sold for $100,000 or more, compared with just 20 at Australia’s next best 2YOs In Training Sale.
The 2021 gross was 94% higher than the next best Australian auction house while the average was the highest ever for a 2YO Sale in Australia.
The diverse buying bench is one of the main reasons leading 2YO preparer Blake Ryan sells exclusively through Inglis.
Last year over $9m – or 75% of the sale’s overall aggregate – was spent by Australian-based buyers which included the likes of Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young, Freedman Racing, Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou, Bob Peters, Annabel Neasham, Lindsay Park, Trilogy Racing, Blueblood Thoroughbreds, Andrew Williams Bloodstock, Robbie Griffiths and Mathew de Kock, Duncan Ramage, Roll The Dice Racing, Bruce Slade, The Osher Group etc as well as buyers from the likes of Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Philippines etc.
“The local buying bench has really come to the fore the past couple of years especially, it’s a sale that just continues to go from strength to strength and I know from my own perspective that this is the biggest and strongest draft I’ve ever taken and I’m sure I’m not the only one,’’ Ryan, who will prepare “around 20’’ 2YOs for October’s Inglis Ready2Race Sale, said.
“Historically, the Ready2Race sales in Australia were predominantly for Asian buyers, but certainly in recent years, graduates of the Inglis sale especially have been making a massive impression domestically, as well as internationally.
“The diversification of the buying bench Inglis gets to the sale has been the No.1 influencer in the rapidly increasing strength of the sale. In the past my focus would have been on bringing horses that were suitable specifically for the Asian market to the sale, but now I’m just going and buying a nice horse knowing that there is more confidence from the domestic market in the product.
“You can take a nice horse to this sale and sell it well. The quality of offering has also improved out of sight and they’re all going on and winning races, which brings the buyers back the following year and that’s so important.’’
Recent graduates of the sale back Ryan’s comments up – dual G1 winner Nettoyer , G2 winner and G1 placed colt Lightsaber, fellow G2 winners Allibor, Forgot You and high-class Hong Kong sprinter Wishful Thinker, G3 winner Gunstock, G1 VRC Oaks runner-up Douceur, Stakes winners such as Trumbull, Super Wealthy, See You In Spring, Malkovich, Starlight etc as well as high class performers like Stageman, Redwood Shadow, Silent Theory, Handsome Bo Bo and Democracy Manifest to name just a few.
Cheltenham Stables’ John Malcolm, who will offer a draft at the Inglis Ready2Race Sale for a third consecutive year, is confident some of his will end up on the ‘highlights’ list in years to come.
“It’s a very smart draft this year, 12 horses, a nice mix of proven sires and first season sires and to be honest, they’re really some of the nicest horses we’ve ever worked with,’’ Malcolm said.
“The real standout is a The Autumn Sun x Sopraffina colt, he’s one of the best horses we’ve ever broken in and we’re really looking forward to getting him to Riverside and also really keen to see how he progresses after the sale because he’s such a nice horse and gives us all such an amazing feel already. He really is a very exciting prospect to be taking to the sale.
“My biggest thing in selling with Inglis now is the buying bench they get to this sale. Inglis gets so many buyers, from country trainers to city trainers, agents and syndicators, buyers from Hong Kong, Singapore and elsewhere, it’s a great buying bench and we’ve got a good range of horses that should cover all of those bases.’’
This year’s Ready2Race Sale will be preceded by breeze up sessions at Seymour (Friday September 9), Eagle Farm (Wednesday September 14), Warwick Farm (Friday September 16) and Cambridge (Monday September 19), as well as a final session back at Warwick Farm the Friday prior to the auction (Fri Oct 7).
High-quality video footage of each breeze, as well as all times, will be available on the Inglis website within days of the gallops.
“There is no fluke in the success this sale has enjoyed the past few years especially, both for vendors and buyers,’’ Inglis Senior Bloodstock Consultant Harry Bailey said.
“We work closely with vendors all year round to assist them in hopefully recruiting the right horses to breeze up and we have put a huge amount of work into developing a buying bench of real substance featuring both domestic and international buyers at all levels.
“The buyer sheet for the Inglis Ready2Race Sale the past couple of years has been comparable to a Classic Sale or a Premier Sale and with the increased strength this year’s catalogue is already shaping up with, I’m confident a huge range of buyers – both domestic and international - are again going to be impressed.’’
