Pedigree Potential Pointers for NZ National Weanling Sale

A hot bloodstock market in Australia has left many pinhookers empty handed with the NZB National Weanling Sale on Friday June 17 offering a final opportunity to secure a quality weanling by a selection of exciting first season sires.

A member of the powerful Waikato Stud stallion team, Dundeel’s Caulfield Guineas winner Super Seth is seeking to continue the success of the High Chaparral sireline which has proven so successful in our part of the world.

Super Seth

Super Seth has five entries for the sale and Lot 59 offered by Jamieson Park is an interesting colt being from imported Landslide (USA), a daughter of champion sire More than Ready.

Super Seth’s sire Dundeel has had three winners from four runners out of mares by More Than Ready and one of those is this season’s exciting 2YO Let’srollthedice. He won the Group II VRC Sires Produce Stakes before finishing third in the G1 Sires and fourth in the G1 Champagne, performances that will have him well favoured for the Caulfield Guineas in the spring.

There is only a very limited opportunity to secure a weanling by dual Group I winning sprinter Ten Sovereigns (IRE), who shuttled to Valachi Downs for just the one season from Coolmore Ireland.

Ten Sovereigns (IRE)

A Group I winner at two and three, he was the Champion 3YO Sprinter of 2019 and is the fastest son of Scat Daddy’s brilliant son No Nay Never, who stands at a fee of 125,000 euros.

Lot 1015, a filly offered by Valachi Downs, could just as easily be catalogued for the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. She is a half-sister to stakes-placed Woodcote Lass and is from unraced Pivotal mare Lady Woodcote (GB), a full sister to Group I winner Maarek.

Ten Sovereigns sire No Nay Never has had five runners from Pivotal mares and four are winners headed by stakes-winner Nymphadora.

Grangewilliam Stud’s Group I winner Wyndspelle is a Group I winning son of Iffraaj, who is rapidly rising to prominence as a sire of sires thanks to Wootton Bassett (GB) (sire of Almanzor (Fr), Turn Me Loose and Ribchester (IRE).

Wyndspelle filly from Surveillance

He has one entry for the sale in Lot 110 from Little Avondale Stud, a filly (first foal) from placed Rip Van Winkle(IRE) mare Surveillance, a daughter Group II winner Sarwatch, in turn a daughter of four time Group I winner Riverina Charm.

This filly is bred along very similar lines to Wootton Bassett’s Group I winning 2YO filly last season Zellie, who is also from a grand-daughter of Galileo.

Group I winning sprinter Exceedance has already impressed with his first weanlings in Australia selling for up to $200,000 and his lone entry for this sale has much to recommend.

Exceedance

Lot 31 offered by Currraghmore is the second foal of well related Pierro mare Drama Series, who comes from a family noted for top class fillies producing dual Group I Oaks winner Episode and Group I winner First Seal.

First Seal has a place in history as she famously beat the great champion Winx in winning both the Group I ATC Flight Stakes and Group II ATC Tea Rose Stakes.

This filly is by a son of Exceed and Excel from a daughter of Pierro and these two sires have enjoyed a good affinity. Pierro has had 11 winners from 15 runners bred from daughters of Exceed and Excel and they include this season’s Group II winning filly Paris Dior, Group III winner Bellevue Hill and three more stakes-placed horses.

Dubawi’s outstanding son Too Darn Hot (GB) has lit up Australian weanling sales in recent weeks with youngsters selling for up to $320,000 and the triple Group I winner has a colt and filly on offer both consigned by Jamieson Park.

Too Darn Hot (GB)

Lot 42 is a quality filly from an impressive Kiwi  Black Type family being the third foal from stakes-winning Savabeel mare Grazia, a full sister to dual Australian Group I winner Shillelagh and Group II BRC Brisbane Cup winner Tullamore.

There has not been a lot of exposure for the Dubawi x Savabeel nick but they do combine in the pedigrees of three winners from just six runners and interestingly two of those winners are Group placed fillies Love Sensation and Slave to Love.

Lot 87 is a colt from one of the best female families in Australia tracing back to blue hen Shantha’s Choice via the Monsoon Wedding branch of the family.

He is from unraced Stratum mare Refreshing, a three-quarter sister-in-blood to Group III winner Summer Monsoon and half-sister to stakes-winner Sangria.

This celebrated family has achieved success with Dubawi to produce talented US based 4YO mare In Italian, who is from Group III winning Redoute’s Choice mare Florentina. In Italian won the Group III Gulfstream Honey Fox Stakes earlier this year and her pedigree has much in common with Lot 87.
