Shamino Makes it Two Stakes Winners in a Week for Shamus Award

Mark Smith - Sunday September 18

Nearly two years and twenty starts since his last win, the Phillip Stokes-trained Shamino outbattled fellow 7yo warrior Kemalpasa in Saturday's W H Wylie Hcp (1100m) at Morphettville.

Given a ground-saving ride by Will Price, the first crop son of Shamus Award defeated Kemalpasa (Magnus) by three-quarter of a length, with the favourite Taunting (Brazen Beau) a head back in third.

It completed a three-timer for Price and rounded out a good win in South Australia for Shamus Award after Noname Lane claimed the Listed Balaklava Cup (1600m) on Wednesday.

Shamino won for the first time since the Listed Doveton Stakes at Sandown in November 2020. Previously, he won the Listed Manihi Stakes at Morphettville and was second to Snitzcraft in the Wylie in 2020.

With his third stakes success, Shamino advances his record to ten three four from 34 starts with earnings of $462,020.

"It feels great; he's been around mark quite a lot recently, contesting with big weights," assistant trainer Tommy Stokes said.

"We keep him nice and fresh, and he goes to Greg Lesnikowski's between runs, and they do a good job with him.

"He likes to be fresh, so six or so weeks between runs and thrives off it.

"It's great to see him get up for the owners. They have a lot of horses with us, so it is great to get one on the board for them, especially in a Listed race.

"He has been around the mark for a long time, and the owners have kept faith with him, so onwards and upwards, hopefully."

A Brook family homebred, Shamino is the best of four winners from as many to race out of the very talented El Moxie mare Elumino, a 6-time winner in Melbourne.

ned by Peter Moody, Elumino was an honest performer; numbering wins at Caulfield (x2), Flemington, and Sandown (x2).

Elumino died in 2020. Her final foal is an unraced 3yo Supido filly named Misludi, who is also in training with Phillip Stokes.
