Magnus Sprinter Wins G3 Bauhinia Sprint Trophy

Tara Madgwick - Monday January 9

The Group III Bauhinia Sprint Trophy (1000m) at Sha Tin on Sunday produced a trifecta for Australian bred sprinters with Sight Success (Magnus) proving too good for Rewarding Together (Pierro) and Sky Field (Deep Field).

Trained by John Size, Sight Success improved off his last start second in the Group I HK International Sprint behind Wellington score his first stakes win.

He surged to the line for Vagner Borges to win by a long head in 55.96 seconds taking his overall record to eight wins and four placings from 23 starts.

“I’m very happy. I want to thank Mr Size very much. The horse has been very consistent and he got the job done,” Borges said.

“He’s a good horse – a simple horse to ride – he just needed to be in the right race like he was and he was able to win the race. He has a lot of ability and I believe the horse will improve even more. I believe he can go higher.”

“The draw was very important, there was a lot of speed in the race and we were able to sit handy and then when I asked the horse, he responded really well.”

John Size indicated Sight Success might be given a tilt at the Group I Centenary Sprint Cup (1200m) at Sha Tin on 5 February.

“He’s always thereabouts no matter what race he’s running in, he runs a good race and puts himself in the finish. It’s just a matter of how his condition holds up,” the 11-time Hong Kong champion trainer said.

A $45,000 Magic Millions Perth Yearling purchase from the Dawson Stud draft for Price Bloodstock, Sight Success is the best of four winners from Tarp, a metro winning Bletchley Park (IRE) mare from the family of Group winning sprinters Mobile Link and Papillion.

Dawson Stud will offer the yearling half-brother to Sight Success from the first crop of young Fastnet Rock son Long Leaf at MM Perth as Lot 23.

Tarp was sent back to Widden Stud’s Magnus in 2021 and produced a full brother to Sight Success last spring.

Sight Success is the 27th stakes-winner for evergreen sire Magnus, who has nine entries for Inglis Premier.
