Frankel's Call Di Opens Winning Account

Mark Smith - Friday February 3

The valuable Frankel filly Call Di broke her maiden at start three over 1400m at Randwick-Kensington on Friday.

Given a positive ride by Nash Rawiller, the Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou trained 3yo was making her first start since finishing third behind A Lot More Love and Vienna Princess in the Listed Reginald Allen Quality (1400m) at Randwick last October.

The Strawberry Hill homebred defeated the $1.050,000 Snitzel filly Outsider by three-quarters of a length, with the Tavistock filly Episodic a further two lengths back in third. Both the second and third carry the colours of Jonathon Munz.

“She is still learning her craft, and I think she will be a better filly when ridden quiet,” Gerald Ryan said.

“We scratched from Kembla on Tuesday due to the heavy track. I was a bit worried about the 1400m first-up, but Nash rode her great.

“It’s Di’s birthday (part owner Di Crawley), so it’s great.”

Call Di is the eighth winner from as many to race from the outstanding racemare Samantha Miss.

On a previous date with Frankel (GB), Samantha Miss left the Group II ATC Tea Rose Stakes winner Miss Fabulass.

A daughter of Redoute’s Choice, Samantha Miss won three at the highest level, VRC Oaks, AJC Champagne Stakes, and Flight Stakes, when trained by Kris Lees.

Samantha Miss, a $1,500,000 Easter yearling, banked $1,763,260 with seven wins from 12 starts. She hit the headlines again when purchased by John Singleton for $3,850,000 at the 2009 Inglis Australian Easter Broodmare Sale.

Strawberry Hill Stud consigned an I Am Invincible filly to the 2022 Easter Yearling Sale but failed to meet her $800,000 reserve.

After foaling a Pierro filly last spring, Samantha Miss revisited Coolomore Stud’s champion son of Lonhro.
