Stakes Breakthrough for Frumos in Pam O'Neill Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday May 20

Orbis Bloodstock’s American-bred mare Frumos (USA) looked a stakes-winner in waiting when reeling off wins at her first three starts in June last year, and she finally achieved the milestone in Saturday’s Magic Millions Pam O’Neill Stakes (1600m) at Doomben.

Ridden by James McDonald for Chris Waller, the 5yo daughter of Kitten’s Joy defeated Princess Rhaenys (Iffraaj) by a half-length with Osmose (FR) (Zoffany) a half-neck back in third.

“It was a good win, aided by a very good ride,” Waller said.

“James put her in the perfect position and travelled comfortably, let down at the right time, and she stuck on gamely.

“There’s a nice series for mares here. In two weeks, there’s a half-million-dollar race. She’ll head there at Eagle Farm again over a mile and be hard to beat there.

“If she wins next start the Tiara at Eagle Farm (is possible).”

With her stakes breakthrough, Frumos advances her record to five wins and a second from 11 starts with earnings of $355,630.

Bred in Kentucky by Ken Ramsey,  Frumos (USA) was a €220,000 purchase for David Simcock Racing from the Grove Stud draft at the 2020 Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Breeze-Up Sale.

By the perennial champion US turf sire Kitten’s Joy (El Prado), Frumos (USA) is the daughter of the 4-time winner Desertstormelite (Chester House), a  half-sister to stakes winner Enduring Will (Arch).

Granddam Jodie Faster spent her latter years in Australia. She was the daughter of Gr III winner Vivano whose Gr 1 placings included the Frizette Stakes, Gazelle Stakes, Beldame Stakes, Matron Stakes and Shuvee Hcp.
