Written Tycoon Flyer Acromantula Scorches in Carlyon Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday August 26

The West Australian flyer Acromantula scorched around the Moonee Valley in near record time to earn a first stakes win in Saturday’s Listed Paramount Liquor Carlyon Stakes (1000m).

Ridden by Craig Williams for Daniel & Ben Pearce, the 6yo son of Written Tycoon was never headed when stopping the clock at 0:57.05. He defeated the 5yo Pride Of Dubai mare Hypothetical by a length with the 6yo Moshe gelding Ashford Street a further two and quarter lengths back in third.

Third behind the WA superstar Amelia's Jewel in the Group III Roma Cup at Ascot in April, Acromantula prepped for the Carlyon Stakes with a third to Sweet Ride and Omni Man at the same track and distance.

With his stakes breakthrough, Acromantula advances his record to eight wins, six seconds and four thirds from 25 starts with earnings of $549,452.

“We have had a couple of close calls here in Melbourne so it’s good to get one over the line,” Daniel Pearce said.

“He’s a quick horse and he was able to use his asset today.

“I was happy when they left him alone. When he was on his own and Willow quickened up from the 600m we were happy.

“We have some thinking to do. He was well suited today at set weights and penalties so we will give it some serious thought.”

A homebred for Alan Olive, Acromantula is the best of six winners from seven to race for the -time Listed stakes winner For Your Eyes Only (Bletchley Park).

After foaling an All Too Hard colt last spring, For Your Eyes Only was given a year off.

Acromantula is the 53rd stakes-winner for the former champion Australian sire Written Tycoon who stands at Yulong Stud in 2023 where his fee has been advertised as on application.
