Beiwacht upstaged his more fancied rivals to win the $1million Group I ATC Golden Rose last Saturday in course record breaking style to become the hottest colt in Australia giving us the opportunity to chat to a legend that has been very much involved in his story so far.

With his first Australian bred two year-olds running this season, Darley shuttler Pinatubo (IRE) was in the frame overnight in France with a new two year-old stakes winner Quiescent taking out the Listed Prix Herod (1400m) at Deauville in the Wathnan Racing colours.

Reflecting on a brilliant Melbourne Cup Carnival that featured three G1 winning stayers all sired by stallions standing in Victoria it’s the perfect time to think outside the box and plan to breed a high-class stayer of your own.

From the point of view of the bloodstock world, Beiwacht was the most significant winner from last weekend with his Group I Golden Rose victory propelling his sire Bivouac to the top of the second season sires list, but it wasn’t just Godolphin cheering him home with a number of other Aussie breeders now invested in his family.

Karaka graduate Captain Pluto (NZ) (Savabeel) collected the second black-type success of his career with a big finish to take out the A$125,000 Listed Luckygray Stakes (1800m) at Ascot on Saturday. 

The majority expected a first season sire to win the Group II Silver Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on Saturday, it just wasn’t expected to be Bivouac, but that’s the way it played out with Beiwacht scoring an impressive win and getting his ticket to the Golden Slipper.

There were 26 stakes run at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival last week and they were all won by different horses with no horse successful more than once which is somewhat unusual, although we shall always wonder could have been for Tentyris.

Massive week of stakes racing behind us and we’re all a bit carnival weary, but we can take heart from the fact the Aussie bred stayer has not yet joined the Tasmanian Tiger on the path to extinction.
