Precious Cargo

Tara Madgwick - Thursday May 22

Sometimes it’s not so much about the mare, it’s more about the stallion she’s in foal to and what the overall package looks like.

It seems amazing to think that at the 2021 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale there were 25 mares that sold for $1million or more and while that number seems unlikely to be challenged when the sale unfolds next week there are some mares that will be in high demand because of the precious cargo they carry.

Four mares are catalogued in foal to Too Darn Hot (GB).

Too Darn Hot (GB) did not shuttle to Australia last year and as a result savvy breeders with the funds to make it happen were able to acquire mares in the Northern Hemisphere to visit him to Southern Hemisphere time and four of them will be offered at Magic Millions.

Darley ultimately decided to send Too Darn Hot back to Australia and he will arrive later this spring and his fee of $275,000 speaks volumes for how this stallion is now regarded given the last time he was here you could go to him for $44,000.

The mares in foal to Too Darn Hot are listed below:

Lot 710 Lady Edith (USA) – Newgate Consignment

Three time Listed winner by Street Boss and in foal to Too Darn Hot in her first season at stud.

Lot 718 Lilliesformillie (USA) – Newgate Consignment

Listed winner at two from just four starts and in foal to Too Darn Hot in her first season at stud. From a family that has had great success in Australia producing Group I winning sprinter Wild Ruler and Group III winner Pavitra.

Lot 939 Blessed Truly (Can) – Yarraman Park

Listed winner at two and is importantly a half-sister to Group III winner Ms Bad Behavior (Can), the dam of Australian Group I winning colt Switzerland and her current yearling colt by Snitzel sold for $2.7million at Inglis Easter this year. In foal to Too Darn Hot in her third season at stud.

Lot 947 Café Society (Can) – Newgate Consignment

Two time winner and Group II placed, she is in foal to Too Darn Hot in her second season at stud.

Five mares have been catalogued in foal to Extreme Choice.

Due to his well-documented fertility issues, Extreme Choice is not an easy stallion to breed to, but his statistics and achievements explain why so many breeders continue to roll the dice with him.

He had 28 yearlings in total sell this year at Magic Millions Inglis Easter and Inglis Premier at an overall average of $506,785 and set a new benchmark for himself with a colt from Shadow selling for $1.7million at Inglis Easter.

He has five mares in the sale that all appear to be in foal as follows:
