Daylight Debut 2YO Winner for Too Darn Hot

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday July 8

Too Darn Hot (GB) is coming back to Darley Australia this spring at a fee of $275,000 and he added a 12th Aussie 2YO winner for this season to his tally at Ballarat on Tuesday with an impressive debut winner in the Myracehorse colours.

Trained by Tony and Calvin McEvoy, Volkano was a short priced favourite and gapped his rivals to win the 1200m maiden by four and a half lengths with Harry Coffey in the saddle.

A big strong horse that will take benefit from the run, Volkano had a big group of owners braving the cold to watch him win and Calvin McEvoy believes gelding will be the making of him.

“He won well didn't he. You know, we always have a few reservations first starters and he did look a bit woolly in the yard like there was plenty more to come, but thankfully his ability got him over the line,” said Calvin McEvoy.

“He's a very well-bred horse and we paid a little bit of money for him, but his pedigree was huge and it’s great for all the owners that have come out today.

“As a colt he tried to jump through the gates here in a trial and then wanted to pull himself up, so unfortunately we had to geld him, which is hard to do with a well bred colt, but it can be the making of them.”

Volkano was a $425,000 Magic Millions purchase from Bell River Thoroughbreds for MyRacehorse Pty Ltd/McEvoy Mitchell Racing/Belmont Bloodstock and is the first foal of Group III winner Volks Lightning.
