Five Wins Straight - Walsh Bay Wins Queensland Cup for Munce

Tara Madgwick - Sunday October 12

Progressive Deep Field mare Walsh Bay has built an impressive picket fence of wins in Brisbane this year winning six of seven starts in 2025 and her last five in a row culminating with a Black Type victory in the $160,000 Listed BRC Queensland Cup (2400m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

Trained by Chris and Corey Munce, four year-old Walsh Bay won her first two starts in April and May last year before losing form, but since resuming from a spell in July has made rapid progress through the grades.

Having her first try at 2400m and first attempt at Black Type on Saturday, Walsh Bay was given a good ride by Damien Thornton and beat the race favourite So You Are by a head in a bitter battle to the line.

Walsh Bay has the impressive record of eight wins from 15 starts with prizemoney topping $378,000 and has done a great job for her owners, who include former federal politician and chairman of the ATC Peter McGauran.

McGauran was Minister for Agriculture back in time when Chris Munce ran into legal trouble in Hong Kong and he was instrumental in returning the jockey to Australia, so the win of Walsh Bay will be a sweet success for the team.

Walsh Bay was an $85,000 purchase from MM 2YO's in Trraining.

Walsh Bay was purchased by Munce Racing for $85,000 from the Nolen Racing draft at the Magic Millions 2YOs in Training Sale and was a successful pinhook having been bought from the Newgate draft at Magic Millions for $55,000 by Mitchell Williams Bloodstock.

Walsh Bay was bred by SF Bloodstock and foaled and raised at Newgate Farm. She is the bets of three winners from five to race from imported stakes-winner Invading Humor (USA), who produced a colt in mid December last year by Extreme Choice.

Walsh Bay is the 42nd stakes-winner for now pensioned Newgate sire Deep Field.
