One To Watch - Kembla Grange

Mark Smith - Tuesday May 19

A luckless fifth when making her career debut over 1200 metres at Canterbury a fortnight back, the Gerald Ryan-trained Zoustar filly Zoumist displayed a dazzling turn of foot to put paid to a good looking field of two-year-olds over 1400 metres at Kembla Grange on Tuesday.

Settled back second last in the 13-horse field by Adrian Layt, Zoumist tracked in to the three-wide line approaching the home turn.Zoustar

Godolphin’s Namazu, a Medagia d’Oro (USA) colt out of the Blue Diamond winner Earthquake, looked to have set up a winning lead at the 200 metres before Zoumist came with a barnstorming finish to prevail by a widening one and three-quarter lengths.

Another Godolphin runner, Silhouette, a daughter of Teofilo out of the Group III winning Shamardal mare Cameo, was another half-length back in third just ahead of the Kermadec colt Kermanding, who once again had little luck.

However, Zoumist was a class above her rivals here and looks to have the talent to go on to bigger and better things.

The homebred daughter of Zoustar is the seventh winner from nine to race out of the god producing General Nediym mare Surprise Bid who is a granddaughter of the top-class Bustino mare Kittyhawk, winner of the Lowther stakes and was runner-up in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Surprise Bid has a weanling colt by Dissident and was covered by Flying Artie last spring.

Zoustar will stand the forthcoming season at Widden Stud at a fee of $121,000.
