The Inglis Australian Weanling Sale on Monday and Tuesday features a good selection of youngsters by first season sires with the most represented being – King’s Legacy, North Pacific, Ole Kirk, Anders, Farnan and Prague – so let’s take a look at the gallery pages for these sires, who were sale ring and racetrack rivals, now taking the battle into a new arena, so who will come out on top.
The 2019 yearling sale season was a good one for expensive colts in hindsight with the colts below all going on to racetrack success before embarking on stud careers at major farms.
A $1.4million Magic Millions yearling by champion sire Redoute’s Choice, King’s Legacy was a dual Group I winner at two of the Sires Produce Stakes and Champagne Stakes. Closely related to Not a Single Doubt, he was the busiest first season sire in 2021 covering 212 mares at a fee of $33,000.
North Pacific topped the 2019 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale when selling for $800,000 and remains the second highest priced yearling by Brazen Beau ever sold. A Group III winner that was second to Ole Kirk in the G1 Golden Rose, he covered 202 mares in his first season at a fee of $22,000, so was only marginally behind King’s Legacy in terms of popularity.
Written Tycoon colt Ole Kirk might have beaten North Pacific in the Golden Rose and then gone on to win the Caulfield Guineas, but in the sale ring he finished second to him as the second highest priced yearling sold at 2019 Inglis Premier fetching $675,000. He covered 170 mares in his first season at a fee of $55,000.
Bred and sold by Arrowfield, Anders is from the same generation as the three previous sires and the Group III winning son of Not a Single Doubt made $670,000 at Magic Millions and covered 184 mares in his first season at a fee of $16,500. He can claim a win over Ole Kirk, beating him by five lengths in the Listed ATC Rosebud.
As a Golden Slipper winning son of Not a Single Doubt from a daughter of Street Cry (IRE), Farnan has a lot of positives and was a $550,000 Magic Millions yearling. He was the dominant juvenile of this generation winning five of six starts including two before Christmas and was undefeated in the autumn winning the G2 Silver Slipper and Todman Stakes before his Slipper victory beating the Champion 2YO Filly Away Game. He covered 192 mares in his first season at a fee of $55,000.
At $1.6million, Prague was the most expensive yearling by Redoute’s Choice sold in 2019 and King’s Legacy was the second highest. There was not much between them in the sale ring or on the track with King’s Legacy beating Prague by half a length in the G1 Sires’ Produce Stakes with Ole Kirk fourth in that race. Prague covered 95 mares at a fee of $16,500.
