Golden Slipper Sale Mail – Who Bought and Sold Them for How Much!

Tara Madgwick - Thursday March 20

The world’s richest race for two year-olds, the $5million Group I ATC Golden Slipper runs this Saturday and is often a showcase for expensive yearlings with the favourite this year also the most expensive horse in the race.

Click here for the gallery of all Slipper runners sold at auction to see what they looked like this time last year.

Most expensive runner this year is Wootton Bassett (GB) colt Wodeton, who was bought from the Segenhoe draft at Magic Millions by Tom Magnier for $1.6million making him the highest priced colt from the first crop of his sire.

As a comparison, the other Wootton Bassett colt in the race, West of Swindon was offered at the same sale by Widden Stud and made $350,000 when bought by Hawkes Racing.

Another of the expensive colts is Group I MRC Blue Diamond Stakes winner Devil Night, who was bought for $1.4million from Kingstar Farm by Yulong making him the third highest priced colt at that sale for Extreme Choice. The other two that made more money – Guardsman and Tour de France - have yet to race.

The third individual million dollar yearling in the field is Farcited, who made $1.2million at Magic Millions when bought by Waterhouse & Bott/Kia Ora/Farnan Partnership/Mt Hallowell Stud from Bell River Thoroughbreds.

The cheapest yearling in the race is Lucky Vega (IRE) filly Within the Law, who was bred and sold by Yulong and made just $30,000 at Inglis Classic when bought by Darby Racing, who have won the Slipper previously with another bargain filly in She Will Reign, can lightning strike twice?

The table below shows the sale details of all Slipper winners from 2010 and as you can see it’s somewhat of a mixed bag and the homebred horses this year in the Top 16 are the Godolphin pair Beiwacht and Tempted along with Emirates Park homebred Marhoona.
