Pericles Turns Back the Clock

Tara Madgwick - Saturday September 6

Six year-old Street Boss (USA) gelding Pericles won the Group II ATC Tramway Stakes (1400m) two years ago in 2023 when trained by James Cummings and he repeated the effort at Randwick on Saturday, but this time he is in the care of Bjorn Baker.

Transferred into other stables along with all the other Godolphin horses at the end of last season, Pericles has made a smooth transition into his new home and duly delivered the goods on race day.

First up from a spell, he was well ridden by Josh Parr and overpowered well weighted Group I winning $12million earner Private Eye to win by more than a length.

It was the first  win for Pericles since he took out the $2million ATC Five Diamonds last spring and his overall record stands at seven wins and 10 placings from 28 starts with prizemoney topping $5.6million.

“He was well forward. I was in no doubt we had to be fit and on top of our game as it was a very good field. He is a lovely horse. You get a readymade horse like him, he's won over $5 million,” said Bjorn Baker.

"Looking at his record, a race like this, he's in at set weights and penalties he is going to be awfully hard to beat and some of his work at home has been sensational.

"We all know how important it (to win for Godolphin) is and how lucky we are. He's a very good horse. Anybody could train him."

Pericles is a half-brother to Group I winners Helmet and Epaulette as well as Group winner Pearls and Bullbars being one of six winners from blue hen Accessories (GB), who was pensioned earlier this year.

Her last foal is a two year-old filly by Ghaiyaath (IRE) called Abaya, who has been sent to Anthony and Sam Freedman to train.
