Fiesta Wins Flemington Derby Day Finale

Tara Madgwick - Saturday October 31

Classy five year-old I Am Invincible mare Fiesta has rediscovered her best form and made it back to back stakes wins when capturing the final race at Flemington on Derby Day with a dominant win in the Group III VRC Furphy Sprint (1100m).

The Chris Waller trained Star Thoroughbreds colour-bearer was a last start Group III winner at Caufield and carried that good form into this assignment carrying more weight to charge home from last and win running away by more than a length under Hugh Bowman.

"I thought maybe the 1100 metres was a bit short of her best distance, but it's a bit of a testing track with that headwind today, so it certainly set up for a horse of her pattern of racing, but she was certainly dominant,” said Hugh Bowman.

“I had them covered, pretty comfortable, a fair way out.

"Chris has got her in fine form. I personally thought she felt a bit better in herself this afternoon than she did last start.

"I don't know if we can find another race for her this week, but she's in great order."

A $150,000 Inglis Classic purchase for Star Thoroughbreds / Chris Waller Racing from the Fairhill Farm draft, Fiesta was bred and offered for sale by Mike and Debbie O’Donnell and has the overall record of five wins and 10 placings from 28 starts with prizemoney of $1.5 million.

Fiesta is the best of three winners from Now Now, a winning half-sister by Danehill Dancer (IRE) to Group II placed Rock Cocktail from the family of Group III winners Charm Scene Land and Stock Around.

Now Now has a yearling filly by Pierro and was covered by Justify (USA) last spring producing a filly on October 5.

I Am Invincible is Australia’s most expensive stallion this season standing at Yarraman Park at a fee of $209,000.
