Snitzel Colts Quinella Clarendon

Tara Madgwick - Saturday April 30

The $130,000 Clarendon Stakes (1400m) for 2YO’s at the Hawkesbury stand alone meeting does not carry Black Type, but invariably attracts a strong line up and two colts by champion sire Snitzel fought out the finish with Burgunder too good for the 2021 Magic Millions sale-topper Basquiat.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, Burgunder was fourth at his first start over 1100m at Hawkesbury earlier this month and relished the step up to 1400m to overpower Basquiat to win by a neck.

He’s a lovely colt in the making and still a preparation away,” said Adrian Bott.

“We’ll have a good think about what we do with him after today, whether we push on to Brisbane or wait for the spring as he has some great pedigree behind him.”

Burgunder was a big strapping yearling colt.

Burgunder was a $300,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Arrowefield draft  for G Waterhouse / A Bott / Kestrel Thoroughbreds and runs for a partnership that includes US based Eclipse Thoroughbreds, who raced his mother Pinot with great success.

Burgunder is the first foal of Pierro’s Group I VRC Oaks winner Pinot, who was also trained by Gai and Adrian. Pinot is certainly a blue-blood as her dam is Group I ATC Australian Oaks winner Dizelle, a daughter of Group I VATC Blue Diamond Stakes winner Danelagh.

Her second foal, a filly by The Autumn Sun, was bought by Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott / Kestrel Thoroughbreds from the Arrowfield draft at Inglis Easter this year for $420,000 and Pinot was sent to stud in Japan at the end of 2020.

Both Burgunder and runner-up Basquiat appeal as bright prospects for the season ahead, their sire Snitzel to stand at Arrowfield at $220,000 this spring.
