Lonhro Colt Lindermann Off The Canvas in Rosehill Guineas

Mark Smith - Saturday March 18

Second in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas at his most recent start, the Lonhro colt Lindermann climbed off the canvas to win Saturday’s $600,000  Group 1 Sky Racing Rosehill Guineas (2000m).

Ridden by Nash Rawiller for Chris Waller, Lindermann led at a solid clip before coming under extreme pressure from the favourite Pericles.

Godolphin’s Street Boss (USA) gelding put his head in front, but Lindermann rallied to win by a half-head. It was a further three lengths back to the Snitzel colt Williamsburg in third.

A homebred for Debbie Kepitis’ Woppit Bloodstock, Lindermann advances his record to three wins and four seconds from 11 starts with earnings of $719,800.

“He’s a real gentle giant, a big boy,” Waller said.

“Nash woke him up two starts ago when he won over 1400m here, and it has been the making of him.

“He has really learned to fight and, at the same time, matured as a man. He showed us a glimpse of ability at Flemington back during Cup week at 1800, and from that point on, we said, ‘we’ll set him for this race’. It doesn’t always come off, but it has today.

“He ran a good second in the (Randwick) Guineas last start, and he did all the work today.

“He got eye-balled by the favourite (Pericles) with 300 metres to go, and he lifted off the canvas.”

“James (Cummings) is a great trainer, and he’s got a great team behind him. There is no rivalry, I actually support James, and he respects me, and I wish him all the best.

“I think he’d have a better chance of going back to a Doncaster (than the Derby). It’s good to have options.”

The son of Lonhro is the best of two winners from as many to race for the talented Stratum mare Self Esteem and was foaled and raised at Coolmore for Woppitt Bloodstock.

A winner at Rosehill and Warwick Farm, Self Esteem was runner-up in the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet and was fourth in the Group 1 Vinery Stud stakes won by Single Gaze.

A great-granddaughter of Stratheden Stud’s influential Sommes Sound (USA), Self Esteem has an unraced 2yo Nicconi colt named Cranberries and a yearling colt by Written Tycoon.

After missing in 2021, Self Esteem visited Written By last spring.

Lindermann is the 95th black-type winner and 13th Group 1 winner for Darley Stud’s Lonhro.
